Discussion board FAQ

Q: How do I create more viewing area in order to see the discussions better

A: There are some options to maximize the discussion viewing experience:

  • Minimize the "Directions" window, see screenshot below:

  • You could try increasing your screen resolution (control panel, display, settings, Screen Resolution, increase that setting)

  • If that is already maximized, you can try maximizing the browser window and removing the toolbars, by toggling the F11 key on your keyboard.
  • You can also collapse the course guide to the left, in order to create more horizontal screen real estate.

- Install Firefox browser (download here), it generally does a better job rendering Angel
- If you are using Vista or IE 8, try setting compatibility mode.
See step by step directions for setting compatibility mode with screenshots

When using a Threaded Discussion in Angel, the default is to show the postings and replies in the “Collapsed” mode. This means that when you look at the discussion, you will see something akin to:

+ Topic for Today

If you want to see responses, you need to click on the “+” sign at each incidence in order to see what is below it. If you click on the “+” symbol, you might see:

-Topic for Today + I’m only interested in yesterday

There is an easier way to do this:

In the upper left corner of the window that lists the postings, there are the words "Post Title." If you place the cursor over the "+" sign to its left, a message will pop up saying "Expand All Threads." Click on this "+" sign and the window will show all postings and all responses, using indents to indicate responses to the foregoing postings. (The "+" will also change to a "-".)

To reduce the need to scroll up and down, just click on the "-" and the threads will collapse. Then you can click on the "+" of any posting and it will expand just for that posting.

Q: How do I subscribe to threads

A: The instructor must enable thread subscriptions in order for it to be available for students.

Q: How do I view all the posts for just one single student, for easier grading

Go to your course, then go to the discussion forum, and click on the utilities link for that forum.

On the Utilities menu page, click on “Grade Forum”. On this next page, you can see all the students in your course. and you can see how many posts and replies they created, and you can grade the student for that forum, assuming you have connected the forum through the assignment tab to the gradebook. See example below. To see the actual posts altogether for that student, simply click on their name on the left, and you will get a page with all their posts and dates.

Q: How to set up a scoring rubric

A: Open up the instructor manual (click the ? icon):
Home > Instructor Reference Guide > Lessons Tab > Discussion Forums > Creating a Discussion > Discussion Settings: Assignment Tab > How to Set Up a Scoring Rubric
